Name: Ahri
Series: League of Legends
Canon point: current patch (4.12)
Age: unknown – probably chronologically young, but physically and mentally an adult.
Gender: female
Appearance: image
Ahri is rather stunning all around, but her most noticeable feature is her nine long white tails (indeed, her champion title is “The Nine-Tailed Fox”). When fully extended, they reach over her head, and they appear to all move independently of each other (although she sometimes pulls them all very close together, so that they almost look like one large tail). It is unknown if all Ionian foxes have nine tails, or if this feature is just particular to Ahri.
She also has pointed black fox ears (and some costumes also show that she has human ears as well), which match her long black hair. Her cheeks both have three whisker-like marks on them, and her eyes are orange. Her skin is fair, and her default costume shows her Ionian background, with its pointed shoulders and wrapped middle.
History: Ahri’s Lore page on the official site is here. I’ll try to go a little more in-depth here!
First, let’s talk about the world of League of Legends. The world itself is named Runeterra, and it has been ravaged by magical warfare so much as to create permanent physical instabilities. Realizing that their disputes could end up destroying the planet, the leaders of Runeterra decided to create a controlled arena for political battles. The result is the titular League of Legends, a neutral organization where organized matches determine otherwise unresolvable political issues. In order to fight for the League, a potential champion must pass through a Judgment, during which their minds are opened up and explored by the League Council. If they pass their Judgment, the individual officially becomes a champion and can be summoned to fight for any faction. When summoned, a champion and summoner link psychically and work together to win the battle, along with four teammates.
Ahri began her life as an ordinary Ionian fox, and so likely did not care about world politics. She did, however, wish desperately to be a human. When she stumbled upon a magical battlefield (not all conflicts are resolved by the League, and the southern provinces of Ionia had long been under attack by Noxus) and approached a strangely fascinating dying mage, her wish was granted. It is not clear from the lore how and why exactly this happened, but contact with the mage gave her a more human form as “his life essence poured into her”. She retained this essence-capturing power and used it to consume more souls, knowing that each one would bring her closer to truly being human. Using her wit and charm, she seduced men and then killed them to increase her humanity and power.
Unfortunately, the very thing she desired most would end up stopping her from really achieving it. As she grew more human, she began to understand morality, feeling guilty for the murders she committed. Eventually, she realized that she could not continue stealing essences, and ended up at the League of Legends, where Runeterra’s most powerful magicians resided. They agreed to help her search for a nonlethal way to become human, in exchange for her services as a champion.
Personality: Perhaps the most obvious aspect of Ahri’s personality is her flirtatiousness. Her dialogue in-game includes plenty of alluring giggling and suggestive phrases (“indulge me”, “come try your luck, if you think you’re in my league”), and one of her moves is even called “Charm”. Her backstory states that she used her extreme beauty and natural magnetism to trick and manipulate people before arriving at the League, and some of her quotes suggest that she’s still willing to do so (in fact, when selecting her for play, she sweetly – temptingly - asks, “don’t you trust me?”). Other quotes (“they’ve exhausted their use”, “should I make your pulse rise? Or…STOP?”) further reveal her still-evolving morality. It is important to note that she DOES have some sense of right and wrong, however - her champion quote reflects on both the positives and negatives of having human morals: “mercy is a human luxury…and responsibility”; and, of course, she specifically joined the League in order to find a way to become human without killing anymore. It seems that she is still growing and learning what it means to be human, with an imperfect but evolving sense of ethics.
Ahri is also stated to be very clever, figuring out how to trick men into letting their guards down so that she could feed off of them. Also mentioned are times when she seems to have a natural instinct for things, such as when her form first changed (“though she appeared human, she knew that in truth the transformation was incomplete”). (Her initial transformation notes her “feeling drawn” to a mage in a similar manner; however, that might be due to the magic rather than her guts.) She may additionally have the innate sense of curiosity that comes with being a fox, as she happens upon a messy human battlefield and explores it, rather than turning away.
Although Ahri’s lore does not address this specifically, in general League champions are known to have strong wills and minds. The Judgment that they must go through involves exposing their memories and thoughts to the League Council, so they must be capable of withstanding scrutiny and confronting themselves (Judgments are sort of like lucid dreams). When participating in a match, champions also “die”, sometimes many times; this is not an actual death, as matches are performed in a sort of magical microcosm that doesn’t physically affect the real world, but it is still “an extremely traumatic experience for both [summoner and champion]… for this precise reason, champions and summoners are a rare breed.”
Finally, while champions often have their own political allegiances, “they must surrender their right to refuse the call of a summoner for any reason” – meaning that Ahri and the others have to be open to fighting for and with those they may otherwise call enemies.
Abilities/Powers: Ahri is a magic user and has five standard abilities in-game. Three of her abilities deal with magic energy: “Orb of Deception” (Ahri throws out her magic orb in a line in front of her, doing damage to any enemy it passes through), “Fox-fire” (Ahri surrounds herself with three fox-fire beads, each of which can hit one enemy that comes within range), and “Spirit Rush” (Ahri dashes forward up to three times, surrounded by damaging energy that hits nearby enemies). These three abilities are fairly simple to translate from in-game to an RP setting (AHRI CASTS MAGIC MISSLE basically; Spirit Rush also seems to give her a short speed-boost).
Her other two abilities are more difficult to translate:
“Charm” - in-game it causes the first enemy hit to walk, entranced and unable to do anything, towards her for a short amount of time. Ahri’s “profound gift of beauty” is mentioned in her backstory, and she is noted as using her charms to seduce men in order to steal their essences. The in-game “stun” nature of this ability may be just a game mechanic, rather than what she actually always does in lore in order to “seduce”. I would generally play it as a natural personality trait she has that can be revved up temporarily if she feels like she needs it (+20 to charisma, make a will save, etc.).
“Essence Theft” - in-game this allows Ahri to occasionally regain health from her attacks. However much she hurts enemies for, she gets healed for a percentage of that. This is obviously an in-game/in-League mechanic, since in her backstory her theft ability kills her target and gives her more humanity/power. However, Ahri (generally) does not WANT to kill people nowadays, due to her evolving morality, so this will likely not be used in RP at all.
She is also likely in good physical shape, since matches involve running back and forth across the Rift.
Personal Items:
- Dynasty costume
- Midnight costume
- Popstar costume (minus the color changing on her tails, ears and hair of course)
- a Void Staff. While in a match, this item increases a mage’s power and allows them to ignore some of their enemies’ magic resistance. In Ariel, it will basically just be a pretty stick.
- a special brush for her fur
